El Parque Nacional de Los Haitises (cuyo nombre significa \u201ctierra alta\u201d o \u201cmonta\u00f1a\u201d en la lengua de los antiguos ta\u00ednos) es uno de los paisajes naturales protegidos m\u00e1s importantes de la Rep\u00fablica Dominicana. Abarca una superficie de unos 1.600 km2, que forma parte de un vasto sistema c\u00e1rstico creado hace 50 millones de a\u00f1os, y comprende un rico mosaico de ecosistemas marinos y terrestres: estuarios, ensenadas, bah\u00edas, cayos y mogotes -las curiosas formaciones rocosas en forma de cono que caracterizan el paisaje de la zona-, as\u00ed como dolinas, manglares, etc. Es decir, un inmenso parque repleto de atractivos naturales donde vivir aventuras \u00fanicas.<\/p>\n
Apart from its indisputable wealth, this great National Park is also an ideal place to discover the rich (both present-day and pre-Hispanic) cultural heritage of the Dominican Republic Places such as Sabana de la Mar show the modern charm of the Dominican Republic, but in nearly 100 caves scattered throughout the Park, you can discover the country\u2019s largest collection of prehistoric paintings, an invaluable legacy of ancient, pre-Columbian civilizations.<\/p>\n
Los Haitises offers all kinds of experiences from thrilling adventures to visits focusing on appreciating the area\u2019s natural wonders or its archaeological treasures. Of course, you can always have a mixture of all these, and therefore gain a much better appreciation of the Park\u2019s wealth in general.<\/p>\n
One of the features of the Park\u2019s karst landscape \u2014 limestone rocks eroded by water \u2014 is the formation of caves of many different sizes; these are one of Los Haiteses\u2019 chief attractions. They draw visitors for two reasons: firstly, their immense natural wealth and the beauty of their rock formations. The second, and perhaps more important, reason is that many of these caves contain amazing collections of pictographs and petroglyphs created hundreds (even thousands) of years ago by the island of La Espa\u00f1ola\u2019s original inhabitants. Places such as the caves of La Reyna, La Arena, San Gabriel, Willi and La L\u00ednea are veritable galleries of tremendously impressive cave paintings that no visitor should miss.<\/p>\n
